Rating: 4/5 – The Anarchy Sisters Return in New Adventures…on Paper!
by ComicSpectrum reviewer Al Sparrow.
While Studio Gainax is deservedly famous for shows like Evangelion, it’s when they go off the rails and give us fun stuff like FLCL and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt that they’re at their unbridled best. Fans of that second series, rejoice! The angels who were kicked out of heaven for being too lewd are back, in all new adventures (in manga format) that rival pretty much everything contained in the original anime.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt tells the story of two angelic sisters – Panty and Stocking – who have to atone for their actions by earning credits to get back into heaven by eliminating ghosts. Panty is addicted to sex. Stocking is addicted to sweets. They’re assisted in their mission by Garterbelt, a cross-dressing priest with a penchant for…well, that’s best left up for you to discover on your own. Suffice it to say that the story pushes boundaries even South Park can’t touch, and does it all with a cartoony style that belies the constant stream of sex jokes, cursing, and lewd situations that make this book a definite “not for the kiddies” contender (if the title didn’t tip you off).
That said, if this is your type of humor, and the anime wasn’t enough to slake your thirst, this book pretty much keeps that same madcap pace going with jokes about everything from censorship to dildo-shaped thermometers, and all things in between. The vulgar humor is, as strange as this sounds, what gives P&SwG its charm. Tagro, the artist and writer, does a great job with Gainax’s property, no matter how apologetic he might sound in the afterword.
This book, of course, will not be for everyone, but fans of the anime series have some fun new stories ahead of them. Fallen angels Panty and Stocking are back, albeit in comic book form, but it’s a welcome return.
